Is Orotic Acid Supplements Better Than Milk?

Milk, in particular skim milk, can make gout attacks easier and even lower uric acid over time. Lower uric acid concentration in your blood means less risk of the formation of uric acid crystals in your connective tissue - and lower risk of gout attacks.
But milk contains sugar - one glass as much as a banana. The sugar is not table sugar, or even fructose like in a banana (or a soft drink). It is lactose, which becomes glucose and then fructose in your liver. And after it has been fructose, it is broken down by the purine breakdown products in your liver, eventually becoming uric acid.
So should you invest in an orotic acid supplement, or keep drinking milk? Here are the pros and cons.
MILK: PROS AND CONS
+ Milk is natural - even if there are concerns about the living conditions of cows, they are living beings.
+ Milk contains lot of different good things besides orotic acid. And it is good for everyone in the family.
- Not everyone can drink milk. You have to have a certain set of genes to drink it (Scandinavian, Swiss, or Masai heritage).
- The concentration varies - Every cow is different and will produce different levels of orothic acid. Even if the milk from hundreds of cows is ultimately homogenized, there is no standardized production.
OROTIC ACID: PROS AND CONS
THE CONCENTRATION MATTERS
One liter of milk contains approximately 8 micrograms of orothic acid. For comparison, one teaspoonful of orothic acid weighs about 1.5 grams. That is more than 10000 as much. While orotic acid is not poisonous, it is a really bad idea to overdo it. You do not know what will happen in your body if you try to drink 10000 liters of milk.

If you want to know more about what you can do about your gout and how to make sure you never have a flareup again, try reading my little book "Gout Simply Explained" which chronicles the research I did and what I found out. It is quite simple, really.
